Before you start
- Yahoo rejects your normal Yahoo password in third-party email apps. You need an app password generated from your account security page.
- Each app password is shown only once. Generate a separate one for each app so you can revoke them individually.
How to generate a Yahoo app password
- Sign in at login.yahoo.com and open Account Info.
- Go to Account security.
- Find Generate app password (on some accounts it’s under “Other ways to sign in” → App passwords).
- Type a name for the app, such as “MailsOnMine”, and click Generate password.
- Copy the password and paste it into your email app’s password field.
Common errors and how to fix them
- “Invalid credentials” or “LOGIN failed”
- You used your Yahoo account password. Generate an app password and use that.
- Connection timed out
- Your network may block outgoing mail ports. For sending, try port 587 with STARTTLS instead of 465.
- An app password stops working
- It was revoked, or you signed out of all devices from your Yahoo account. Generate a new one.

Frequently asked questions
Is Yahoo Mail IMAP free?
Yes. IMAP access is included with free Yahoo Mail accounts.
Should I use port 465 or 587 for Yahoo SMTP?
Both work: 465 with SSL/TLS, or 587 with STARTTLS. If one is blocked, try the other.
