Quick answer
| Setting | Incoming (IMAP) | Outgoing (SMTP) |
|---|---|---|
| Server | imap.mail.me.com | smtp.mail.me.com |
| Port | 993 | 587 |
| Encryption | SSL/TLS | STARTTLS |
| Username | Your full iCloud email address | |
| Password | An app-specific password (not your Apple Account password) | |
Apple lists only port 587 for iCloud SMTP. If STARTTLS fails in your app, Apple suggests trying the app’s SSL/TLS option on the same port.
Before you start
- Your Apple Account needs two-factor authentication turned on. Without it you can’t create app-specific passwords.
- Your normal Apple Account password won’t work in third-party apps. Create an app-specific password instead.
- The same servers work for @icloud.com, @me.com and @mac.com addresses.
How to create an iCloud app-specific password
- Go to account.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
- Open Sign-In and Security and choose App-Specific Passwords.
- Click Generate an app-specific password and give it a name, such as “MailsOnMine”.
- Copy the password (it looks like xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx) and paste it into your email app’s password field.
Common errors and how to fix them
- “Authentication failed” with your Apple password
- Third-party apps need an app-specific password. Create one (steps above).
- A working password suddenly stops working
- Apple revokes all app-specific passwords when you change or reset your Apple Account password. Create a new one.
- Username rejected
- Use your full iCloud address. For IMAP, Apple says the part before the @ usually works too, but the full address is the safe choice.
