Which IMAP and SMTP ports should I use?

PortProtocolEncryptionWhen to use it
993IMAPSSL/TLSThe standard for reading mail. Use this whenever the provider supports it.
143IMAPSTARTTLSOlder IMAP port that upgrades to encryption. Only if 993 isn’t offered.
465SMTPSSL/TLSSending with encryption from the start.
587SMTPSTARTTLSSending with encryption after connecting. The most widely supported option.
25SMTP—Server-to-server delivery. Usually blocked for email apps; don’t use it.
995 / 110POP3—POP3, not IMAP. POP3 downloads mail instead of syncing it, and MailsOnMine doesn’t use it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IMAP and SMTP?

IMAP is how an email app reads your mailbox and keeps it in sync with the server. SMTP is how it sends messages. Every email app needs both.

Why is my normal password rejected?

Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud require an app password for third-party apps, and Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 require “Sign in with Microsoft” (OAuth). Your normal password only works on the provider’s own website and apps.

Should I use IMAP or POP3?

IMAP. It keeps the same folders, read status and messages on every device. POP3 downloads messages to one device and is mostly used by old setups.
